Our Togetherness Will Get Us Through
BFFC Response to the 2024 Presidential Election
This morning’s news was not what many of us were hoping to wake to. In this moment, I feel angry, scared, and betrayed, and I imagine you may be experiencing some of these emotions, too.
My dear friend from Ireland told me that there, when tragedy strikes or when death visits, people turn off their televisions and radios for a week or longer. The idea, I suppose, is that the empty space leaves room for heartache to bloom for a while, and for anger, fear, and any other condition of the heart to bloom alongside it. To feel what needs to be felt, even as it hurts us.
Surrendering to this empty, quiet space also reminds us that we’re not alone there. Political beliefs aside, so many of us are hurting on this Wednesday because of what today’s news means for our individual and collective sovereignty.
Over the past ten years, we have built the Boston Food Forest Coalition on the concepts of belonging and “beloved community.” We believe in a Boston that works for everyone and in which we all belong, not in spite of but because of our many differences. Our coalition affirms the inherent worth and dignity of all people, as well as that of the natural world.
So maybe you turn off your TV and radio today. Maybe you visit a food forest or check in on a friend or hug your child. Whatever you do, we hope you remember that we have built this coalition precisely for this moment. We’re in this together, now more than ever.
As an organization, BFFC is determined to stand shoulder to shoulder with you in defending your sovereignty and dignity. I trust you will stand with us. It is our togetherness that will carry us through the tumultuous times ahead.
In Solidarity & Relentless Hope,
Hope Kelley
