Franklin Park Zoo

Learn about the soil food web and the 19 rules gardeners need to know to use it to your advantage. We will discuss the 5 essential ingredients for soil formation, ecological soil amendments, companion and cover crops that aid in soil formation and the effects of tillage.

Be prepared to get dirty! This will be a hands-on workshop and participants will put their newly acquired knowledge into practice as they work in the Organic Garden Project at Franklin Park Zoo. Participants will enhance the soils in the Zoo's own forage forest garden by spreading and inoculating mulch with beneficial fungi.

Offered in partnership with Zoo New England, this spring series of workshops and talks at Franklin Park Zoo focus on urban sustainability and permaculture principles. Workshops are designed to provide participants with hands-on opportunities to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice.
