Learn about the soil food web and the 19 rules gardeners need to know to use it to your advantage. We will discuss the 5 essential ingredients for soil formation, ecological soil amendments, companion and cover crops that aid in soil formation and the effects of tillage.
Be prepared to get dirty! This will be a hands-on workshop and participants will put their newly acquired knowledge into practice as they work in the Organic Garden Project at Franklin Park Zoo. Participants will enhance the soils in the Zoo's own forage forest garden by spreading and inoculating mulch with beneficial fungi.
Offered in partnership with Zoo New England, this spring series of workshops and talks at Franklin Park Zoo focus on urban sustainability and permaculture principles. Workshops are designed to provide participants with hands-on opportunities to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice.
-There is no cost to participate in this workshop, but pre-registration is required. Space is limited. Bring your BFFC membership card
-Participants should meet at 11:45 a.m. at the Zebra entrance at Franklin Park Zoo, located at One Franklin Park Road, Boston, MA 02121.
-In addition to the knowledge gained, these workshops are volunteer opportunities for participants. A chaperone is required for every three volunteers under the age of 18. Volunteers under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
