  • 10 AM - 1 PM

Learn the *why* behind winter pruning, as well as the methods, approaches, considerations, and tools needed. This three-hour workshop will be a mix of explanation, demonstration, and hands-on practice. No experience is necessary. Just bring your pruning questions, and a pair of garden gloves if you have them!

This workshop will be led by Ben Crouch of Land of Plenty Organics. Ben has been teaching tree pruning with BFFC for years, and is an expert in fruit tree care and maintenance.

A Bit About Hope Garden

For neighbors who are interested in growing food and plants, the garden has four large raised beds, a pollinator garden and several fruit trees and shrubs. It even has an urban greenhouse for indoor plant growing and tool storage. Additionally, the Boston Food Forest Coalition provides educational workshops and individual support to neighbors of Hope Garden who are interested in caring for the space and building their gardening skills.

Hope Garden is currently looking to expand its team of stewards. Stewards are the main caretakers of a garden/food forest, and have the opportunity to drive decision-making for this community asset: what to grow, how to engage neighbors, and what programming to offer.

If you are interested in joining the stewardship team, please contact Alice Tilton at alice@bostonfoodforest.org or 617-237-6780.

History

Hope Garden was once a vacant lot on bustling Geneva Street in Dorchester. Through partnership and collaboration between neighbors, community members, and various local organizations, this previously-neglected space was transformed into a community-run garden and food forest open to the public.

As a beautiful public green space on a busy street, Hope Garden is now a lovely area for sitting and enjoying nature, especially for riders of the 15, 19 and 17 buses, which stop right outside the garden. The space has benches and tables along the sidewalk facing the street.
